How do I use Slice-Hip?

Use the Slice-Hip command to remove portions of hip ends or long sides of roofs, commonly needed when roofs abut property boundaries or shared walls.

Menu path

Mod-Roof > Slice-Hip

🧾 What it does

The Slice-Hip command allows you to remove a portion of a hip end or an entire long side of a roof. This is commonly used when a roof needs to abut an adjoining property boundary or shared wall.

Key requirements:

  • You can only slice a hip end that is defined as an eave with a hip at each corner

  • The command works on both hip ends and long sides of roofs

πŸ”§ How to use Slice-Hip

  1. Select Mod-Roof > Slice-Hip from the menu

  2. When prompted, locate and select an eave line on the roof

  3. Enter a station value when prompted

  4. The roof will be sliced at the specified position

πŸ›  Understanding stations

A station is the horsizontal measurement position where you want to slice the hip in relation to the selected eave line. This determines exactly where the cut will be made along the roof.

🧾 What happens after slicing

By default, when you slice a hip:

  • Two new raked flashing lines are created

  • These new lines are automatically assigned as eave line types

  • The roof geometry is modified to create the cut

πŸ”§ Customising flashing line types

If you need to change the line type of the new flashing lines:

  1. Use Tools > Cha-LineType command

  2. Select the line you want to modify

  3. Choose the desired line type

This gives you complete control over the flashing used on the new geometry.

πŸ›  Common applications

Hip end slicing: The first common scenario shows a right-hand hip being sliced. This creates a result similar to the lay-back gable command but with different geometry control.

Bottom plane modification: In the second scenario, the bottom plane of the roof is modified. Unlike the lay-back gable command, Slice-Hip can accommodate this type of change where the lower portion of the roof requires modification.

πŸ’‘ Tips

  • Ensure your roof has proper hip ends (eaves with hips at each corner) before attempting to slice

  • Plan your station measurement carefully - this determines where the cut occurs

  • Use the Tools > Cha-LineType command after slicing if you need specific flashing types on the new edges

⚠️ Important notes

  • You can only slice hip ends that meet the definition requirements

  • The command works differently from lay-back gable and offers more flexibility for certain modifications

  • Always verify your flashing line assignments after slicing
