How do I create a Dutch Gable?

Learn how to create a Dutch gable (also known as a Boston Hip) on full hip or flying hip roofs using the Dutch Gable command.

Updated this week

Menu path

Mod-Roof > Dutch Gable

🧾 What it does

This command creates a Dutch gable (also known as a 'Boston Hip') on a full hip or flying hip roof. The Dutch gable combines elements of both hip and gable roof styles, creating a gable section at the end of what would otherwise be a hip roof.

πŸ”§ How to use it

Before starting: You need to know the horizontal distance from the base of the hip to where you want the face of the new gable to be positioned.

  1. Select the Dutch Gable command from the Mod-Roof menu

  2. When prompted, click to locate the ridge at the hip end where you want to create the Dutch gable

  3. You'll see a flashing line appear at the base of the hip - this gives you a reference point to measure from

  4. The Dutch Gable dialog will display, allowing you to set the parameters

  5. Enter your desired settings in the dialog fields

Field

Description

Distance of gable from base of hip

The distance from the flashing line to the face of the gable. A value of zero puts the gable face at the base of the hip. Positive values offset the gable face towards the ridge apex you selected. Negative values offset the gable face to the other side.

Gable Overhang

The verge overhang of the new gable. This controls how far the gable extends beyond the wall line.

πŸ’‘ Additional information

The base of the gable is automatically assigned as an apron flashing when the Dutch gable is created.

Dutch gables can be used on roofs with various eave heights and work well in combination with barge (rake) lines above main entrances for architectural interest.
