How do I create an atrium in the roof?

Learn how to cut out a portion of the roof along an eave to create an atrium or overhang using the Atrium command.

Menu path

Modify Roof > Atrium

🧾 What it does

The Atrium command allows you to cut out a portion of the roof along an eave, creating an atrium. When you enter a negative depth value, it creates an overhang extending outward from the roof line.

πŸ”§ How to use it

  1. Select Modify Roof > Atrium from the menu

  2. Click on the eave line you want to modify

  3. The Atrium defaults dialogue box will appear

  4. Set your atrium parameters (see settings below)

  5. Click OK to create the atrium

🧾 Atrium settings

Field

Description

Distance along eave

The distance along the eave where the atrium cut-out will start. This is measured along the eave from the end closer to where you selected the eave line.

Atrium width

The width of the atrium cut-out.

Atrium depth

The depth of the cut-out measured horizontally. Enter a positive number to create an inward cut-out (atrium), around a chimney or similar. Enter a negative number to create an outward extension (overhang).

πŸ›  Examples

Positive depth: Creates an inward cut-out in the roof (traditional atrium)

Negative depth: Creates an outward extension forming an overhang

πŸ’‘ Tips

Use negative depth values when you need to create overhangs or extensions beyond the original roof line. The measurement reference point is the end of the eave closest to where you initially selected and highlighted by a flashing line end point.
