How do I create a dutch gable (boston hip) on a hip end?

Create a Dutch gable (also called a Boston hip) on a full hip or flying hip by selecting the hip-end ridge and setting the gable distance and overhang.

Updated this week

Menu path

Mod-Roof > Dutch Gable (a.k.a. “Boston Hip”)

What this command does

This command creates a Dutch gable on:

  • a full hip, or

  • a flying hip

To use this command, you need to know the horizontal distance from the base of the hip to the face of the new gable.

How to use Dutch Gable

  1. Select Mod-Roof > Dutch Gable.

  2. When prompted, locate the ridge at the hip end.

  3. A flashing line appears at the base of the hip — this is a reference point to measure from.

  4. The Dutch Gable defaults dialog opens. Set the parameters (see below).

  5. Confirm your settings to create the Dutch gable.

Dutch Gable defaults (what each setting means)

Distance of gable from base of hip

This is the distance from the flashing line to the face of the gable.

  • 0 places the gable face at the base of the hip

  • A positive value offsets the gable face towards the ridge apex you selected

  • A negative value offsets the gable face to the other side

Gable overhang

This is the verge overhang of the new gable.

  • The base of the gable is automatically assigned as an apron flashing
