How do I insert point-to-point dimensions?

Learn how to add dimensions between two specific points on your roof plan using the point-to-point dimensioning tool.

Menu path

Tools > Dimensions > Point-to-Point

🧾 What it does

The point-to-point dimension tool allows you to measure and display the distance between any two specific points on your roof plan. This is useful for showing exact measurements between corners, intersections, or any custom points you need to dimension.

πŸ”§ How to use it

  1. Select Tools > Dimensions > Point-to-Point from the menu

  2. Click on the first point you want to dimension (d1). The cursor will 'snap' to nearby existing points like corners or intersections when you get close

  3. Click on the second point you want to dimension (d2). Again, use snapping to ensure accuracy by positioning your cursor near existing geometry

  4. Click to position where you want the dimension text and line to appear (d3)

  5. The dimension will be created showing the distance between your two selected points

πŸ’‘ Snapping for accuracy

When selecting points, the cursor will automatically 'snap' to existing points on your drawing when you move close to them. This ensures your dimensions are precisely placed on corners, intersections, and other important geometry points.

πŸ’‘ Alternative mouse controls

You can also use the middle mouse button (scroll wheel button) to snap to points during the dimensioning process. If your mouse doesn't have a middle button, standard left-clicking with cursor snapping will work just as well.

⚠️ Important notes

Make sure to position your dimension line (d3) far enough from the roof geometry so it's clearly readable and doesn't overlap with other elements on your plan.

πŸ›  When to use point-to-point dimensions

Use this tool when you need to:

  • Show distances between specific corner points

  • Dimension custom points that aren't covered by automatic dimensioning

  • Create dimensions for unique roof features or intersections

  • Add precise measurements for contractor reference
