How do I insert line-to-line dimensions?

Learn how to add dimensions between two parallel lines to show 3D distances on roof plans.

Menu path

Tools > Insert > Line-Line

This tool creates dimensions between two parallel lines, showing the 3D distance from the first line to the second line. You would typically use this to detail rafter lengths on roof planes or measure between boundary lines of roof planes.

🔧 How to use it

  1. Select the first line you want to dimension from - this sets the position for the dimension

  2. Select the second parallel line you want to dimension to

  3. Review the confirmation message and accept the dimension if correct

🧾 Important requirements

Requirement

Details

Line relationship

Lines must be parallel - non-parallel lines will not create a dimension

Distance type

Always shows 3D distance between the lines

Position control

First line selection determines where the dimension appears

🛠 Specific use cases

Roof plane boundary lines: If the lines you dimension are boundary lines of roof planes (created by 2D Design), you will get the 3D distance reported between them.

Hip end dimensioning: When used on the eave and ridge line of a hip end, the apex will be used to determine the dimension. Select the eave line first as this sets the position for the dimension, then select the ridge line.

💡 Tips

A confirmation message is displayed after selecting both lines, giving you the option to accept the dimension in case you selected lines in error.

The dimension position is determined by the point where you selected the first line, so choose your selection point carefully.
