How do I insert automatic dimensions?

Learn how to automatically insert perimeter dimensions around your roof model using the Insert-Auto tool.

Menu path

Tools > Insert-Auto

What it does

The Insert-Auto tool inserts dimensions automatically around the outside perimeter of your roof model. Running dimensions are automatically placed along the top, right, bottom and left hand sides of the roof.

🔧 How to use Insert-Auto

  1. Open your roof model in Roof Wizard

  2. Go to Tools > Insert-Auto

  3. Click the Insert-Auto button to insert automatic dimensions

  4. Click the button again to remove the dimensions (it's a toggle button)

🧾 How automatic dimensions work

The Insert-Auto button is a toggle button - select it once to insert dimensions, select it again to delete them.

The following diagram shows how perimeter dimensions appear on your roof model:

⚙️ Dimension appearance settings

The size of the dimension text is controlled by the settings in Setup > Preferences > Dimension Defaults and are automatically scaled to suit the size of the job.

The scale is proportional to the size of the job and may need adjusting using the View > Plot Scale function.

💡 Tips

  • Use automatic dimensions for quick perimeter measurements

  • Toggle the tool off and on to refresh dimensions after model changes

  • For more precise control over individual dimensions, use the point-to-point or line-to-line dimension tools instead

⚠️ Important notes

  • USER1-4 lines are construction lines that may appear in roof corners - these are automatically excluded when zones are present to keep dimensions clear

  • Dimensions automatically scale based on your job size but you may need to adjust the plot scale for optimal display
