How do I insert a roof plane?

Learn how to use the Insert Plane tool to create individual roof planes by selecting boundary lines and forming closed loops.

Menu path

Modify Roof > Insert Plane

🧾 What it does

The Insert Plane tool allows you to create individual roof planes by selecting the boundary lines that define each plane. The software automatically traces connected lines in the same plane (i.e. flat) to form a closed loop, then inserts the roof plane.

πŸ”§ How to use it

  1. Access the Insert Plane tool from the Modify Roof menu

  2. When prompted, select a line that forms the boundary of a single roof plane

  3. The software will automatically follow connected lines to identify all edges of the roof plane and form a closed loop

  4. If multiple intersecting lines are found at a corner, you'll see the prompt "Use this entity?" and the lines will flash

  5. Select Yes to confirm the required line, or choose a different line if needed

  6. Once a closed loop is formed, the plane will be automatically inserted

  7. Repeat this process for each remaining roof plane until the roof is complete

If the software cannot make closed loop of the lines selected, you get a prompt to increase the tolerance, in an attempt to find the closed loop.

Note: If it still cannot find a closed loop, then the most likely scenario is that the lines selected are not joined or not in the same plane.

πŸ›  When to use Insert Plane

Use this tool when you need to create individual roof planes as part of your roof design workflow. It's particularly useful for complex roof shapes where you need precise control over each plane.

πŸ’‘ Tips

If the software doesn't find multiple intersections at a corner, it will automatically continue around the outline to complete the closed loop without prompting you for confirmation.
