How do I use Link-Planes to join roof planes?

Learn how to use the Link-Planes tool to properly connect two roof planes by creating clean boundaries and removing duplicate lines.

Mod-Roof > Link-Planes

🧾 What Link-Planes does

Link-Planes joins two roof planes by creating proper ridge, valley, or eave lines where they meet. This tool resolves the boundary between planes so that duplicate, coincident (overlapping at the same location), and overlapping lines are removed, and the most appropriate line type is inserted automatically.

This is essential when you need clean connections between different roof sections, such as joining a main roof to a dormer, or connecting intersecting roof planes.

πŸ”§ How to use Link-Planes

  1. Navigate to Mod-Roof > Link-Planes

  2. Select the first roof plane by clicking on it

  3. Select the second roof plane that you want to connect to the first

  4. The system checks if the planes share a common boundary

  5. If they do share a boundary, duplicate lines along that boundary are automatically resolved to create a single, appropriate line type

πŸ›  What happens during linking

When two planes are successfully linked:

  • Duplicate lines are removed: Multiple lines occupying the same space are consolidated

  • Coincident lines are resolved: Lines that overlap at exactly the same location are merged

  • Appropriate line type is created: The system determines whether the connection should be a ridge, valley, or eave line based on the plane geometry

For example, when joining two roof sections, duplicate eave lines along their shared boundary become a single ridge line.

πŸ’‘ When to use Link-Planes

  • Connecting main roof planes to dormers

  • Joining intersecting roof sections

  • Cleaning up duplicate boundaries after roof modifications

  • Resolving overlapping lines between adjacent planes

⚠️ Important notes

  • This function works on walls as well as roof planes

  • Both planes must share a common boundary for the linking to work

  • The tool automatically determines the most appropriate line type for the connection
