Unable to install Roof Wizard: InstallShield error “Unable to determine version of application…”

This InstallShield issue (most commonly seen on Windows 8.1) can often be fixed by renaming the InstallShield “Installation Information” folder so InstallShield rebuilds it, plus ensuring hidden folders are visible and permissions are OK.

Updated this week

🔎 What’s happening

It appears that this is an issue with InstallShield. We have only seen it with Windows v8.1.

🛠️ Fix: Rename the InstallShield folder

  1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to:

C:\Program Files (x86)\InstallShield Installation Information

  1. Rename the folder to something like:

C:\Program Files (x86)\InstallShield Installation Information.old

  1. Try installing the software again.

👁️ If you can’t see the folder (it may be hidden)

If the abovementioned folder is not displayed, then it will be due to that folder being a hidden folder (not displayed during a normal Windows Explorer search).

To make hidden folders visible:

  1. Open Windows Explorer

  2. Go to View > Options > Change Folder and Search Options

  3. Select the [View] tab

  4. Set the option to: “Show hidden files, folders and drives”

Once enabled, the folder will be visible so that you can change the name, effectively removing it and requiring the Installshield utility to re-install correctly.

🔐 Also check permissions (if needed)

You might have to also check user file permissions. Refer to the appropriate FAQ about setting Windows file and folder permissions.
