How do I construct multi-hip roofs?

Learn to create multi-hip roofs for towers, spires, and bay windows using the Multi-Hip command.

Updated this week

The Multi-Hip command creates complex roof structures with multiple hips radiating from a central apex point. This feature is ideal for towers, spires, and bay windows.

🔧 How to create a multi-hip roof

  1. Access the Multi-Hip command from the Construct Roof module

  2. Click to position the apex point (central point where all hips will meet)

  3. Configure the settings in the Multi-hip defaults dialog box

  4. Click Preview to check the shape before committing

  5. Click OK to create the roof

🧾 Multi-Hip settings

Field

Description

Number of segments

Number of equal length segments to create (minimum 3)

Radius

Horizontal distance from the centre along each hip

Sweep angle

Total angle the multi-hip sweeps from initial direction in anti-clockwise direction. Enter 360° for circular towers or turrets

Ridge extension

Length of ridge projecting from the apex to create gable or hip end. Has no effect with 360° sweep angle

Rotation angle

Angle to rotate the multi-hip clockwise from the current Y direction around the Z axis

💡 Understanding roof plane behaviour

All roof planes around the multi-hip use the same pitch and the same eave line length. However, they don't necessarily meet exactly at the ridge apex.

The example below shows a multi-hip with ridge extension and 180° sweep angle, creating a gable end projection.

🛠 Adjusting hip alignment after construction

If you need all hips to meet at exactly the same point:

  1. Select the completed multi-hip roof

  2. Use Group > Stretch

  3. Middle-click to snap-select the lower apex point

  4. Middle-click to snap the higher apex to its new position

  5. All hips will stretch to the new location (pitch of each plane will vary slightly)

🛠 Common use cases

Circular tower: Set sweep angle to 360°, adjust radius and segments as needed.

Bay window roof: Use sweep angle less than 180°, add ridge extension if required.

Spire or turret: Set appropriate radius and segment count, use 360° sweep angle.

⚠️ Important notes

The apex point you click becomes the central meeting point for all hip lines. Position this carefully as it determines the roof's overall geometry.

When using ridge extension, the sweep angle determines whether you get a gable end or continued hip pattern.
