How do I construct gable roofs?

Learn how to use the Gable command to construct asymmetrical gable roofs and gable projections in Roof Wizard.

Updated this week

Menu path

Construct Roof > Gable

What it does

The Gable command creates asymmetrical gable roofs and gable projections that can be integrated into existing roofs. This is essential for complex roofing designs where standard symmetrical gables won't work.

πŸ›  When to use the Gable command

Use the Gable command when you need to:

  • Create an asymmetrical gable roof (where left and right sides have different pitch or spans)

πŸ”§ How to construct a gable roof

  1. Start the command: Click Construct Roof > Gable

  2. Set the ridge start point: When prompted, click to locate the start of the ridge line, or type coordinates like 0,0 and press [Enter]

  3. Define ridge direction and length: In the command prompt area, specify the ridge direction and length using incremental coordinates.

For example, type ix7500.00 and press [Enter] to create a ridge extending 7500mm in the X-axis from the start point

The software displays the start and finish points of the ridge line, then opens the Gable roof defaults dialog box.

🧾 Gable roof parameters

Field

Description

Roof type

Choose the material category: Tiles, Shingle, Shake, Metal, or Low-Slope

Storey

Set the storey level (1, 2, etc.) for easier roof separation on screen and storey-specific labour rate calculations

Pitch left

The pitch (slope) of the left-hand roof plane, relative to standing at the ridge start point

Pitch right

The pitch (slope) of the right-hand roof plane, relative to standing at the ridge start point

Span left

The span (width) from the ridge to the left-hand eave

Span right

The span (width) from the ridge to the right-hand eave

Left eave height

The height of the left-hand eave. The right-hand eave height is automatically calculated based on the combined factors of span and pitch

Length

The length of the ridge. Defaults to the distance you digitised when setting the ridge direction - change to the required ridge length as required

πŸ”§ Dialog box controls

Button

Function

[Cancel]

Cancels the roof generation and closes the dialog

[Swap Dir]

Reverses the ridge direction (swaps start and end points)

[OK]

Generates the gable roof according to your specifications

When you click [OK], the gable roof is drawn according to the parameters you've defined.

πŸ’‘ Coordinate input tips

When specifying ridge direction and length:

  • Use ix prefix for incremental X-axis movement (e.g., ix7500.00)

  • Use iy prefix for incremental Y-axis movement

  • The measurement is in millimetres

  • This incremental method ensures precise positioning relative to your start point
