How do I insert a Flying Gable?

Learn how to insert a flying gable along a hip line and modify roof planes to suit your design.

Menu path

Modify Roof > Flying Gable

What it does

A flying gable is a gable feature that extends along a hip line, creating a vertical wall section that interrupts the sloping hip surface. This command inserts a flying gable along any hip line and automatically modifies the relevant roof planes to accommodate the new gable structure.

How to use it

  1. Select the Flying Gable command from the Modify Roof menu

  2. Click to select the eave line - this defines the roof plane you want to modify

  3. Click to select the hip line where you want to insert the flying gable

  4. In the Flying Gable Defaults dialog, set your distance parameters

  5. Click OK to create the flying gable

🧾 Flying Gable settings

Field

Description

Distance of apron from eave

The horizontal distance from the eave to the face of the gable. Enter 0 to draw the gable at the base of the hip.

Distance of gable apex from top of hip

The horizontal distance from the top of the hip to where the valley of the new gable will intersect. Enter 0 to wedge the gable at the top of the hip.

πŸ›  Flying Gable configurations

The distance parameters allow you to create different flying gable configurations:

Positioned along the hip: The flying gable sits partway along the hip line, creating a gable feature that doesn't extend to either end of the hip.

Spanning the entire hip: The flying gable extends from the base of the hip to the apex, effectively converting the entire hip into a gable wall.

Starting at hip base: The gable begins at the bottom corner of the hip and extends partway up the hip line.

Finishing at hip apex: The gable starts partway along the hip and extends to the top of the hip line.

πŸ’‘ Tips

Use flying gables to add architectural interest to hip roofs, create additional wall space for windows, or break up large hip surfaces. The two distance parameters work together to precisely position the gable along the hip line.
