Why do I get “The file format and extension … don’t match” when opening an Excel/Word template?

This error usually means the template was renamed with the wrong file extension (for example, changing .XLSX to .XLS). Here’s how to correctly save the template in the required format for Roof Wizard.

📂 What is happening?

This is usually caused by having the wrong file extension on the report template you created and caused by simply renaming FileName.XLSX to FileName.XLS so tat the report is in the right format for our report generator in Roof Wizard.

You cannot simply change the name or specifically the file name extension to get an XLS file format.

✅ What to do

You must open the document in Excel, and select File > Save-As and choose the correct file format and then save.

Then the file format matches the extension type and all is good.

We use the Excel 97-2003 (*.xls) format so that we are compatible with older versions of Excel and still be able to read the reports in the current versions of Excel.
