Auto-Block-2 is an automatic panel blocking method that simplifies cutting lists and panel layouts for field installers who understand the estimator's panel placement intentions. Unlike the interactive Block-Cut method, Auto-Block-2 is fully automatic and generates the simplest cutting lists preferred by manufacturers.

🧾 How Auto-Block-2 works

Auto-Block-2 presumes that all triangle areas have corresponding and matching off-cut triangles. When combined, these create larger rectangular areas which become the 'block' areas. The calculation of blocked areas is based upon ridge lines - each ridge line in the model is represented by 2 blocks that occur on either side of the ridge and extend as far as the roof geometry permits.

πŸ”§ How to use Auto-Block-2

  1. Navigate to Estimate > Cover > Auto-Block-2

  2. When prompted, choose whether to round the number of sheets in each block. This rounds the number of panels/sheets up to a whole number as the calculation progresses instead of at the end, which may result in a few extra panels

  3. Select OK and the blocks are calculated

  4. Select Tally Blocks to generate your cutting list

πŸ›  When to use Auto-Block-2

Auto-Block-2 works well for most roof geometry but not as well on others. Use this method when:

  • Your install crews have experience with this estimation method

  • You need the simplest cutting list format

  • Your roof geometry is relatively straightforward

  • Manufacturers prefer this cutting list format

πŸ’‘ Optimising results

The waste factors for each block may vary depending on roof geometry. Experiment with your particular style of work to find the best result for your business.

All the manual blocking tools may be used to adjust the result as for Auto-Block-1, but this would not normally be expected with Auto-Block-2.

⚠️ Important considerations

This method has been largely superseded by the 'Block-Cut' method of generating cutting lists. However, if your crews know and understand Auto-Block-2, and you know you're using the correct estimating method for them, it remains a viable option for quick and simple roof blocking.
