How do I select insulation systems for my roof?

Learn how to assign insulation and underlay materials to your entire roof or specific roof planes for accurate material estimation.

Cover > Insulation

What it Does

The Select Insulation command allows you to assign various insulation and underlay (or sarking) materials to your entire roof or specific parts of the roof. You can assign materials as individual items such as foil, or as complete 'systems' which might comprise asphalt, board, membrane, and other components.

This feature gives you flexibility to assign areas with no insulation and areas that may have alternate insulation systems. When you click this command, a sub-menu displays with several options for managing insulation across your roof project.

🧾 Insulation Selection Options

Command

Description

Select-Default

Set insulation and underlay for the entire roof

Apply-to-Plane

Apply insulation system to individual planes

Remove

Remove insulation from selected planes

Reset-Plane

Reset planes to use default insulation system

Negative-plane

Insert negative insulation areas for subtraction

Verify

Check insulation applied to specific planes

Show

Highlight planes with applied insulation

πŸ”§ Select-Default

This option sets the insulation and underlay (or sarking) for the entire roof. When you first click this command, the Insulation list shows no insulation selected.

  1. Click Add-Insul to display the list of available insulation types

  2. Select your desired insulation materials from the list to build your insulation system, or select from a pre-defined system

  3. Click Add-Insul again for each additional insulation system you want to include

  4. Click OK to apply the selected insulation system to all planes in the job

You can select up to 20 different insulation materials to create a comprehensive insulation 'system', and these systems can be saved for re-use in future projects.

To remove the default insulation materials, click Remove. This resets the list to being empty.

πŸ”§ Apply-to-Plane

This command applies a defined insulation system to individual planes, independent of the default settings.

  1. Select all the planes you want to change

  2. Build the list of insulation coverings you want for those specific planes

  3. Accept the selection to store the new insulation settings with the selected plane(s)

πŸ”§ Remove

Use this option to remove insulation from selected planes.

  1. Select one or more planes where you want no insulation

  2. Accept the selection to mark those planes as having no insulation

πŸ”§ Reset-Plane

This command removes any alternate insulation systems you have applied to individual planes and resets all planes in the job to use the default insulation system.

πŸ”§ Negative-plane

Insert a negative insulation area that will be subtracted from total insulation calculations.

  1. Digitise points to define the extent of the negative area

  2. A plane is inserted that will be subtracted from the total insulation area during material tallying

πŸ”§ Verify

This command displays the insulation associated with any plane you select. It also indicates if the selected plane is actually a negative area. Use this to confirm your insulation assignments are correct.

πŸ”§ Show

This command highlights all roof planes that have insulation applied, giving you a visual overview of your insulation coverage across the project.

πŸ’‘ Tips for Insulation Selection

When selecting insulation systems, consider how different combinations affect your material quantities and project costing. Common insulation system combinations in roofing include vapour barriers, rigid insulation boards, and reflective foil layers.

Use the Verify command regularly to ensure your insulation assignments match your project requirements before generating final estimates.
