How do I set up flashings for roof covering?

Set up and configure flashings for different roof line categories including ridge, valley, fascia, gutter, barge, apron, box gutter and step flashing.

Flashings are essential weatherproofing components that seal joints and transitions in roofing systems. This feature allows you to configure flashings for each roof line category with global settings that apply across your projects.

Menu path

Cover > Flashings

🧾 What it does

This command sets the flashing types for each line category: ridge, valley, fascia, gutter, barge (rake), apron (end-wall or roof-to-wall), box gutter and step flashing (side-wall).
These become the global settings for each flashing line category type.

You can select from predefined flashings or define custom flashings. The line type names can be customised under Set-Up > Preference Settings > System Preferences > Line Styles.

πŸ”§ How to set up flashings

When you select Flashing, the roof flashing and trim material dialog box opens.

Note: If no flashing lines have been defined (typically when starting a new project or first opening the software), you'll see a virtually blank dialog.

  1. As you create your roof model and add line types during construction, the list populates with line categories

  2. Each line category shows a dropdown list of all predefined flashings that match that category

  3. Double-click in the cell for each item to select the required flashing

  4. Choose from the available options in the dropdown box

  5. Check accessories for each item if necessary (accessories are defined during Set-Up > Flashings)

πŸ›  Flashing options

Your predefined flashing options include:

Option

Description

None

No trim is applied to the line

Custom

Custom fabricated trim parts

Assembly

Aggregated or groups of flashing materials that make up an edge treatment (e.g., box gutter or parapet cap)

Regular flashing item

Bought-in flashing usually fabricated in a roll-former

Important: All materials must first be defined using Set-Up > Flashing.

πŸ”§ Managing accessories

Standard accessories are calculated as previously defined during setup. You can modify accessories by:

  • Double-clicking the accessories cell next to the flashing that needs changing

  • Using the [X] button to delete items not required for this job only

  • Using the [Reset] button to restore standard items to the quotation

🧾 Installer pay rates

At the top of the dialog, select the required Install Pay Schedule for Supply and Install jobs. This rate is defined under Set Up > Metal Pay Rates.

Rate Type

Description

FIXED

One rate for all different pitches

VARIABLE

Different rates for pitch and storey

You can define multiple Metal-Rate files, but consider the overhead of keeping them current. A special rate for flashing items with extra processes (such as scribing hip caps or caulking ridge Z bars) can be set up and will override the regular rate when that flashing item is selected.

🧾 Allowances

Adjacent to Pay Schedule is the Allowances in Use option, which displays the current allowance file. Use the dropdown to select from all defined allowance files. Set up allowances using the Allowances button at the bottom left of the page.

πŸ’‘ Colour settings

Flashing material colour defaults to the roof material colour. Remember to change it if you need a different colour.

⚠️ Roof system complexity

The software recognises different roof system types:

  • Residential systems: Relatively simple with fixed options for panels and flashing, modest accessory lists

  • Commercial/industrial systems: More complex, especially regarding edge treatments (assemblies), substrates and predefined accessory systems

Precise definition of all material parts is essential for the application and automatic parts list generation to work correctly.

πŸ’‘ Saving and updating details

When you generate a cutting list/material list, all details are saved with the model to ensure quantities and costs are preserved for future reference.

If flashing definitions (including updated pricing) have changed since the last quotation, you'll be prompted to update the details when reopening the job. You can choose to:

  • Update to current pricing (changes all old details to new details and pricing)

  • Keep original pricing for comparison

Tip: Save the model as a new job to maintain both old and new costing details.
