How do I set up colours for tiles, shingles and shakes?

Define colour lists for each supplier and automatically add colour suffixes to product codes in documentation.

Menu path

Set-Up > Materials > Tile Colours

What it does

This feature lets you define colour lists for tiles, shingles and shakes for each supplier. When you select materials using Cover > Select Tile (shingle or shake), you can choose from the colours you've defined for that supplier.

How to use it

  1. Go to Set-Up > Tile Colours

  2. Select the supplier you want to define colours for

  3. Add colour names to the list

  4. Enter a Product Code Suffix for each colour (optional but recommended)

  5. Click OK to save your changes

🧾 Understanding Product Code Suffixes

The Product Code Suffix is a code that helps you order the correct materials from your supplier. When defined, the suffix is automatically added to the product code when the software calculates material costing.

This suffix then appears in all subsequent documents describing the material for the job, including product lists and cut lists.

πŸ›  Example

If you have:

  • Ridge cap tile with product code: RT

  • Colour with Product Code Suffix: TE

The product listing will appear as:

Supplier's Name, RTTE, Ridge Tile, Terracotta
(Supplier, Product code with colour suffix, Description, Colour)

πŸ’‘ Technical Details

When you click OK, the colour details are saved in a data file called tilecol.dat in the User folder.

Material data files like this are best edited from within AppliCad software via the appropriate dialogue box. However, as this is a text file format, they may also be edited in Notepad or a spreadsheet programs such as MS Excel.

πŸ”§ Related Setup Tasks

After setting up tile colours, you may also want to:

  • Define the actual tile, shingle, and shake materials

  • Set up metal panel and flashing colours

  • Configure fasteners and other accessories
