Why do jobs “disappear” inside a DAB file?

If file names or model names are too long, Roof Wizard truncates them (path included). This can make it look like the job didn’t save, so users save again — and it appears like models “disappear”. Here’s the cause and the fix.

🗂️ What is happening?

You try and save a file with a long file name:

It looks okay here:

It even suggests that everything is OK here.

However when you go to File > Open... there are duplicates of the model file and half the model name is gone.

⚠️ The Cause

This is caused by the fact that there is a limit to the total number of characters in a file name and these include the full path
(128 characters including spaces and the drive name).

That is, in this example –
C:\AppliCad\Roof Wizard\User\LongFileNameTest\Really long job name example that gets truncated

and you end up with:
C:\AppliCad\Roof Wizard\User\LongFileNameTest\Really long job name example tha

✅ The Fix

The situation can be recovered if you open the first instance that was truncated, and save with a shorter name.

Then you can clean up the ‘dud’ files:

  1. Turn on the right hand menu - [Menu ON/OFF > Menu ON] in the top menu.

  2. Using the right menu go to CAD > File > DL-Model

  3. Select the models you wish to delete, in this case, the broken ones with the long names.

We encourage our users to be brief and concise, use abbreviations where ever possible.
