How do I use the Solar North Marker?

Learn how to place and use the Solar North Marker to ensure accurate shadow and sun azimuth calculations for your solar projects.

Updated this week

What it does

The Solar North Marker indicates true north in relation to your roof model. This ensures shadows and sun azimuth are calculated correctly for accurate solar analysis. Without a North Marker, the software assumes north is pointing up the screen.

After rotation to North (when calculating shadows and azimuth)

Why it matters

Correct north orientation is essential for:

  • Accurate shadow calculations for town planning assessments

  • Proper solar panel positioning and energy calculations

  • Evaluating shadow effects on neighbouring properties

  • Assessing impact on roof fittings and equipment

🧾 Default behaviour

If no North Marker is placed on your model, Roof Wizard assumes that north is pointing up the screen (positive Y direction).

πŸ”§ Custom North Markers

You can create your own custom north marker design:

  1. Create a sub-figure in the CAD system

  2. Name the sub-figure exactly NorthMarker

  3. Save it in the system database (RoofWiz.dab) - the same location as CAD report templates

  4. The custom marker will be available for automatic placement

πŸ’‘ Tips

  • Always verify your north direction using a compass or site plans before placing the marker

  • The north marker affects all shadow and solar calculations in your project

  • Custom north markers must be named exactly "NorthMarker" to function correctly
